Centro Legal De La Raza
Our mission is to protect and advance the rights of immigrant, low-income, and Latino communities through bilingual legal representation, education, community organizing, and advocacy.
Description:
Centro Legal provides free, bilingual, and culturally-sensitive legal aid for low-income Latino residents of Oakland, including recent immigrants from Mexico and Central and South America. Centro Legal provides counsel and advice, referral and representation to 9,000 individuals and families each year in the areas of immigration, housing, employment, family, and consumer protection law. We also support our mission through the Youth Law Academy. This after-school program encourages and supports Oakland youth in pursuing academic excellence, preparing for college, and exploring professional opportunities in the law.
History:
Founded in 1969 by a group of Latino Boalt Hall law students, Centro Legal is the oldest non-profit community law center of its kind in the nation. Located in the heart of the Fruitvale/San Antonio District of Oakland, Centro Legal has been a cornerstone for legal justice for the Latino, immigrant, and low-income communities of Oakland for 40 years.
