Building Bridges Child Development Center understands the need for working families to have access to high quality infant-toddler care. In order to offer such care we must build community partnerships and public support of early care and education that will allow us to provide the best possible care to our youngest members of society.

Position title: Board of Director Positions Available: VP; Co-Chair; Board Member
Description: Experience in the nonprofit sector, early childhood field for a minimum of four years

Educational Background: Public Administration/Nonprofit Administration, Early Childhood Education/Child & Adolescent Development; Consumer and Family Studies; business & finance as it relates to the nonprofit sector and/or early childhood field; or other educational background that can be related to the Human Services/Management field.

Preferred Knowledge of at least two of the following areas :
  1. Quality child care services for infants and toddlers; knowledge of the Program for Infant Toddler Care (PITC) an the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
  2. Adequate pay and work principles for staff that support quality child care programs
  3. Read, review and abide by “Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practices” found at: http://www.nonprofitpanel.org/Report/principles/Principles_Guide.pdf
  4. Practical minded with strong managerial, technical and/or financial background
  5. Technical and professional writing/proposal writing
  6. Human Resources policies and procedures
  7. Public relations/advertising/marketing; online social networking; social capital.
  8. Nonprofit law (Federal: IRS mandates; State: Attorney General mandates)
  9. Managing or overseeing management duties of full-time staff in child care setting.

  10. Desired Qualifications:
  11. Proposal writing experience or with having input on the proposal development process
  12. Knowledge of auditing financial statements
  13. "Friend-raising" experience
  14. Board experience and knowledge of CA non-profit law
  15. Knowledge of infant-toddler child care dilemma in Alameda County/Oakland
  16. Experience serving at-risk populations, specifically low-income families and young children through the non-profit sector or other educational institution
  17. Sliding-scale tuition program
Board Member Responsibilities:: Job Functions/Responsibilities
  1. Attend Official Board Meetings; participate in Unanimous Written Consent Voting Process when cannot attend meetings where thorough understanding of issue is needed to vote appropriately.
  2. Ask questions to ensure Board is exploring matters that involve financial, moral, and legal aspects of what the agency’s responsibilities are.
  3. Commitment to vision, mission and goals.
  4. Provide feedback and guidance to administrative staff in order for agency to effectively carry out with its mission and responsibilities.
  5. Delegate responsibilities of Board to a committee (if needed) with follow up to ensure that responsibilities have been carried out.
  6. Abide by bylaws established by Board for agency.
  7. Monitor job description for Board members and operational staff job descriptions in order to ensure that BBCDC is align with its mission and goals.
  8. Participate in fundraising projects and serve as liason to possible funders.
  9. Possess the ability to recognize when to consult with legal advisors and accountant(s), based on level of information held by board and with having researched reliable and suggested online resources (i.e. www.Boardsource.org; CA Non-profit).
  10. To serve as a competent, respective community member when engaging in activities where you are representing the agency.
  11. Engage in positive public relations, in line with what BBCDC’s board considers as proper statements/representation of agency’s goals, mission and daily operations.
  12. Other projects and responsibilities will be added to board’s job description as needed and when discussed and considered through board discussion.
