Last updated on July 1, 2009

Position Overview
Homework Hangout Helpers work with students at the Livermore Public Library’s “Homework Hangout” program in which youth (grades K-12) can drop in at the Rincon Branch Library on weekday afternoons to study in a friendly atmosphere and to receive help with homework assignments.

Key Responsibilities
•Report to the Rincon Library Manager regarding Homework Hangout schedule.
•Be present in the Homework Hangout room during the scheduled hours to assist children with homework questions. Ensure that all aspects of the program function smoothly.
•Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the program to set up the room; help tidy the room at the end of the scheduled program time.
•Participate in program evaluation by tracking attendance, gathering participant feedback, and communicating issues to library staff.

Initial Impact
Through the Homework Hangout program, approximately 200 children per month will have the opportunity to receive help with their homework in a relaxed and nonjudgmental environment. In doing so, they will also be acquainted with the materials and services the library has to offer.

Commitment
•A commitment of 4 to 5 months (September – December or January – May) is required.
•Volunteers must be available for 3 hours of initial training at the Rincon Branch Library prior to working in the Homework Hangout.
•Homework Hangout Helpers work an average of two shifts per week. Homework Hangout shifts are as follows:
Mondays: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Tuesdays: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Wednesdays: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Thursdays: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

In addition to the above hours, approximately 15 minutes of setup and take down would be needed at the start and end of the program each day, for a total of 2.5 hours per shift.

Skills and Qualifications
Homework Hangout Helpers must be over 18 years of age, read/write at or above a 12th grade level, possess excellent communication skills and have experience working with children. People skills, patience, and a sense of humor are important. Volunteers in this position must be able to maintain discipline in a friendly manner while multi-tasking between various homework questions. Experience with computers and Microsoft Office applications would be helpful. Some knowledge of Library programs and local schools is preferred. Spanish language skills are a plus.
