Camp Fire USA Oakland East Bay Council is looking for volunteer Academic/Literacy Tutors to provide one-on-one or small group tutoring for its after-school programs, Kids With Dreams & Teens In Action!

Located in West Oakland, our after-school programs serve 25-35 inner-city youth daily between the ages of 5-18. Our vision is to stop the generational cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and violent crimes that plaque many youth from disadvantaged families. We accomplish this goal by surrounding and supporting the youth with caring, adult allies known as staff and volunteers!

Our main need is for Literacy Tutors to provide one-on-one or small group tutoring and homework help to our youth for just and hour and a half per week. Currently, 70% of Oakland's youth read below their grade level by the time they get to 4th grade. That means that during homework time in our program, most of our youth are struggling with their assignments.

As a Literacy Tutor, you would help a child or group of kids understand and complete their homework assignment. After that, you would have the opportunity to use our curriculum to develop and enhance the youth's literacy skills. This might mean reading a book with the youth or helping her complete supplemental worksheets that we provide.

Having experience with youth academic development is a plus. You must enjoy working with youth of all ages. We are looking for individuals who desire to be part of a movement that helps at-risk youth realize their potential.
