Our mission is to support women and children in their transition to independence. We are dedicated to creating, nurturing, and maintaining a cooperative living environment of hospitality and respect in the Catholic Worker tradition. Program Description: Oakland Elizabeth House was founded in 1991, and the program is housed in the former convent of in North Oakland. In a primarily volunteer based cooperative model of living, staff, participants, and volunteers work together to support each other for the well-being of all. Oakland Elizabeth House offers a transitional housing program to nine families. The program provides structure, support, and resources for the women and their families to meet benchmarks that will help them to achieve and sustain self-sufficiency. Program participants are given a key to their room and a key to the front door. This makes Elizabeth House unique from other programs; we want the women to feel that they belong here at Elizabeth House and that this is the family’s home while in our program. A family will participate and live at Elizabeth House from 12 to 18 months. Our success rate is about 85 - 90%, measured by the number of participants who obtain permanent housing when they leave our program and maintain housing on their own.
