Zoo Ambassador - Inspire and Educate! Animal Related Opportunities
Powered by Truist

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 29, 2009

The Oakland Zoo is looking for a few good volunteers, age 18 and older, to launch a new program … Zoo Ambassadors! Our attendance has increased dramatically since the opening of the Valley Children’s Zoo last summer. As a Zoo Ambassador, you will be on the front line with our visitors, teaching them about designated animals in the Children’s Zoo, helping at special events, and generally enhancing our guests’ experiences.

The Zoo Ambassador program consists of three modules, each covering a different section of the Oakland Zoo's animal collection. Each four-five week course covers a variety of animal species, the history of the zoo, and how each of us can be a conservationist. There will also be lessons on the art of interpretation, which helps forge meaningful connections between our visitors and the natural world. Guest lecturers, Zoo staff, and docents teach the training, which consists of Wednesday evening lectures and Saturday sessions in the zoo. Once you have completed any one of the three training modules, your commitment to the Zoo is 5-hours per month. A per-module fee of $50 pays for training costs, a name badge, and one Volunteer shirt.

Your road to fun and excitement begins by downloading the full Zoo Ambassador Job Description and Application. Please print the application and return it by mail or fax it to (510)729-7324.

Must be age 18 or older. Must enjoy working with children. Must be accepted into the program and must complete the entire module; have a command of both spoken and written English; be able to communicate via radio; be able to negotiate hilly terrain; be comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather; be able to follow directions; be flexible. You must obtain proof of a tetanus inoculation/booster and TB test prior to beginning your volunteer service.
