Description:
Organizational Information Eisenhower Center, Inc. is a non-profit, innovative work-training program that provides a comprehensive array of rehabilitation services for people with developmental disabilities. We have eighty participants that attend our program daily to work on sub-contract jobs including assembly and packaging jobs. Most of our participants are severely disabled and need assistance with personal cares and feeding. Adaptive equipment is fabricated to assist our participants with their production jobs. Work Services We receive sub-contract jobs from businesses in the community, competing with other packaging companies. A few of the companies we do sub-contract work for are Sax Arts & Crafts, School Specialties, Inc. and Cornell Communications. One of the main reasons we have been so successful is our high level of quality control. Adaptive equipment is a big part of our success. This equipment assists the participants in performing their work. When we get a new job, adaptive devices or jigs are often fabricated out of cardboard and duct tape. Once the device works well for the client, the device is then made out of more durable materials. This approach allows participants, regardless of their disabilities, to increase their job production and earn a bigger paycheck. Adaptive equipment can include a variety of “lazy Susans” that assist the client with counting, scales that are set up to count objects, jelly switches attached to various pieces of equipment to allow easier operation, inverted staple guns, air hoses to push products to the participants and many other devices. The enthusiasm and pride participants have when they have done a job well is wonderful to behold. Therapy Services We also have speech and physical therapy on the premises to better accommodate our participants. The people we serve often need therapy to stretch atrophied muscles, learn how to use their communication devices effectively and progress to live as independently as possible. Educational Services Our Educational Department offers an array of opportunities to our participants. Each client is assessed twice a year and classes are chosen based on client need and desire. Classes are held in small groups, as well as individually. We offer classes in daily living skills, cooking, arts and crafts, music, computer skills, and community outings. Community outings are very popular for some of our participants because oftentimes, Eisenhower Center is their only door to the outside world. One of our participants had the opportunity to go anywhere in the community he wanted. He chose to spend the day at Wal*Mart. He and the Vocational Instructor wheeled his chair up each and every aisle before making his purchase decisions. For this client, that day was a wonderful opportunity.
