House of Peace
Mission Statement: “Based on Gospel values, the House of Peace serves the community by assisting families and individuals in meeting their spiritual, material, and emotional needs, thereby helping families remain together and promoting self-sufficiency.”
Description:
Programs and Services: The HOP offers an Emergency Food Pantry which is open Monday through Friday. The Pantry distributes food provided by the Hunger Task Force (HTF), private donors, and food purchased by the HOP. The HOP food pantry serves residents in the 53205 and 53233 zip codes. Privately donated and HOP-purchased foods are used to enhance the HTF provided food allocations, and to assist people in other zip code areas on a ‘one-time-only’ basis. During the holiday season, the HOP runs a Holiday Food Basket Program and toy distribution. The baskets are filled with food for a household of five. Over 100 community groups donated food for the baskets in 2006 and the HOP purchased the rest. One designated individual from each household must attend a free one hour educational class at the HOP to qualify for the Holiday Food Basket and Toy Program. The Capuchin Clothes Closet is open to people of low income who are in need of clothing. The Clothes Closet receives private donations of used clothing and is given new clothes by CorpCare, Inc. The HOP provides free meeting space to community groups. Others are able to receive spiritual guidance and designated financial aid when in need. The HOP also offers a Nursing clinic run by the UWM College of Nursing staff and a legal clinic run by Marquette University Law School Alumnae and students. In addition, the HOP offers an American Cancer Society ‘Loaning Closet’ for cancer patients in need. The goals of the HOP are to serve the community by assisting families and individuals in meeting their spiritual, material, and emotional needs, thereby helping families remain together and promoting self-sufficiency.
