Agency Details:
Wisconsin Abstinence Coalition
Mission: The Wisconsin Abstinence Coalition, Inc. is a non-profit informational and educational organization with the goal of teaching, supporting and promoting sexual abstinence until marriage. The coalition promotes the teaching of character education that fosters healthy lifestyles. Using solid research and innovative methods, the coalition will achieve its stated program goals.
Description:
We treat all youth as children of promise, not as at-risk kids. Therefore, our programs are directed at helping youth discover their potential, guiding them to fulfill their dreams and empowering them to make a difference in their families, neighborhoods, and their racial/cultural group. The coalition is currently assisting COMPEL, an African American agency in the city, to provide healthy relationship education to teens and young adults. Volunteers would work with this agency. The program topics include relationship skill-building, setting boundaries, seeking friends that are good for you, knowing what an abusive relationship entails, setting future family and marriage goals, determining a relationship plan to meet those goals, the harmful effects of STIs and teen pregnancy on present and future relationships, empowerment to change this community through individual choices. Besides this programming, a monthly E-newsletter is published and distributed to teachers, health professionals, youth organizations, government offices and concerned citizens statewide. We are also involved in advocacy work related to sex education, adolescent development, prevention services, and reproductive health. We recommend ParentsforTruth.org for adults to participate in these efforts.
