Best Buddies Wisconsin
Best Buddies' mission is to create a global volunteer movement dedicated to enhancing the lives of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development.
Description:
In Wisconsin, we support this mission by operating and supporting 16 high school Best Buddies Chapters in the greater Milwaukee area. Additionally, Best Buddies has chapters at 5 colleges: Marquette University, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, University of Wisconsin - Madison, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. Best Buddies Chapters match students with intellectual disabilities with their peers in the typical population in one-to-one friendship pairs. These "buddy pairs" are asked to make contact of some sort - phone, email, talking in the halls, etc - at least once a week; they do something together - such as a movie, lunch, shopping - at least once a month. In addition, the entire chapter does group events at least twice a semester and, at least one group event during the school year is required to be a community service project involving all of the students in the Chapter.
