Academic Mentor and Homework Coach

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 26, 2009

Work one-on-one with a student - learn about their hobbies, help them with homework, develop a friendship. Statistics show that one-on-one mentoring increases a student's grade point average, self-confidence and ability to succeed in college.

Academic mentors work with the same student throughout their service, building relationships while working on homework.

Volunteers must complete and application, orientation and interview prior to service.

The hour I spend each week mentoring my student is the most rewarding and powerful hour of my week.
I tutor a second-grader every Wednesday night. First we work through her homework and then read and discuss a book from their Literacy Enrichment program. Although our work is often serious, we laugh a lot and sometimes color together. I get a lot of joy from doing this work, and I know that I am making a difference in this child's life. I believe that we can overcome the effects of poverty by helping one child at a time.

I am not sure I am matched as well as I could be with a student.
I enjoy working with the students and helping them with their work. I have had a positive experience because the children come to the homework club ready to work and I feel they appreciate the help they receive.

Building a one-on-one relationship with an individual student was an awesome experience.
I have tutored not only with my work organization in an on-site tutoring program, but also at Our Next Generation's center. Working with these children provided me with so much personal satisfaction that it's hard to put in words. These children will touch your heart.
