Arts in Prison, Inc.'s mission is to provide educational and personal growth through the arts for inmates, volunteers and community to motivate and inspire positive change.
Description:
Arts in Prison started in 1996 with the East Hill Singers, a men's chorus of inmates from the Minimum Security Unit at Lansing Correctional Facility and volunteer singers. On November 15, 1998, Robert Shaw, internationally known choral maestro, traveled to North Newton, Kansas, and led a Benefit Sing-Along at Bethel College. 1,275 people participated donated over $25,000 through ticket sales. The non-profit organization, Arts in Prison, was incorporated on December 8, 1998 as a direct result of this Sing-Along. Arts in Prison offers a variety of arts based classes for inmates including public speaking, drama, music, guitar, horticulture, yoga, book discussion, photography, and choirs in the Minimum and Maximum security levels. The East Hill Singers perform each January and June in Kansas City area churches.
