Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site
The last remaining stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail that is open to the public, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site interprets life on a Kansas Farm in the 1860's.
Description:
Tour the home, take a ride in a stagecoach, watch the blacksmith at work, or pack a wagon for the Oregon Trail; you never know what you may discover at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site. Built in 1865 by James and Lucinda Mahaffie, this two-story farmhouse is the only stagecoach stop left on the Santa Fe Trail open to the public. The Mahaffie farm is located on the original Westport Route of the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails. The site is listed on the National and Kansas Registers of Historic Places. Annual special events include the 19th Century Independence Day Celebration in July, the Wild West Show and Bullwhacker Days in September, Cemetery Tours in October and a Christmas Open House in December. Special programs are offered for school children, motor coaches, and other groups by reservation, and the grounds and Heritage Center may be rented for weddings, reunions, company picnics, and other functions.
