Volunteers will assist adult students with their computer literacy. From navigating websites and e-mail to learning how to use Microsoft Office and other basic computer skills, you can help them help themselves! More and more of our students need to be able to master technology along with basic reading skills in order to secure a job, be successful in school and have access for their own personal use. If you are patient and love working with computers, you will make a great tutor. This opportunity is sponsored by: Literacy Kansas City

Overall Experience

One of the best organizations for which to volunteer!!
 |
When I first started looking for a volunteer opportunity, I discovered so many great causes, but sometimes the training left something be desired. When I found Literacy Kansas City, it was wonderful. It has an extensive training program (don't be scared!), and you really feel prepared to work one-on-one with an adult student learner. Also, Literacy Kansas City offers a wide range of volunteer experiences. I tutored for over a year, then as my schedule changed, I was able to take on other roles such as giving reading tests to incoming students, or help out with volunteer orientations. This has been and is a very rewarding organization for which to volunteer! posted by cathylee2006 on July 13, 2006 |

Overall Experience

The opportunity to help an adult improve their reading skills is extremely rewarding, and I anxiously look forward to our meetings each week.

I have been a tutor with Literacy Kansas City for seven years. I retired after forty years as an accountant, so I had no teaching experience whatsoever. The organization provided the necessary tutor training sessions and support to enable me to confidently meet with my student.I have been meeting with my current student for one and one-half years. He is a 54 year old man who needed assistance to enable him to succeed on his job. Although a high school graduate from Arkansas, his reading tested and the second grade level when he came into the program. Recently he tested at a sixth grade level and his confidence has soared. It is a delight to meet with him each week, and he frequently expresses his gratitude. I would certainly recommend the program to anyone who was to try to make a difference in someone's life. posted by Fred Valentine on June 25, 2006 |
