Our mission is to develop and implement programs and services to improve the quality of life for residents of Washington Heights and the city of Battle Creek, and not only empower them to be self-sufficient, but to also become active, productive members of the community.
Description:
Currently, Community Ministries houses three programs: YOUTH - Our Place - an after school program which runs Monday thru Thursday from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m., and S.T.E.P.-U.P. - the summer enrichment portion run in June, July and August from 9:00a.m.-3:00p.m. Monday thru Thursday. Both components provide the following age appropriate activities: homework assistance, computer training, drug prevention training, arts and crafts, field trips with an educational focus and team work development. Our Place currently has 32 students enrolled. During the summer, enrollment could go as high as sixty; SENIORS - the Senior Program caters to culturally sensitive residents by providing them with daily interaction and fellowship with peers, health screenings, exercise classes, games designed to keep their cognitive skills sharp, community service programs to keep seniors actively involved in the community, transportation for medical and shopping needs, and a hot, nutritious meal. All program participants are provided transportation to and from the program daily at no costs; PUBLIC - the agency serves a hot meal daily at 3:00 PM, Monday thru Thursday, and breakfast on Saturday mornings. These meals are available to anyone, and for some, is the only meal they get each day. Many working families and senior citizens benefit from the program when funds from low-paying jobs or fixed incomes do not allow for the purchase of enough groceries to last each month.
History:
Since 1966, Community Ministries has served the residents of the Washington Heights community and the city of Battle Creek with programs like Adult Education, Upward Bound, Higher Learning, health screenings, job training, transportation, pre-natal assistance, senior citizen services and hot meals. Under the leadership of the Rev. Clifton Bullock, Community Ministries re-defined its legacy of feeding the hungry, nurturing youth, and assisting seniors that continues today.
