Description:
The Salvation Army, established in 1865, is an international religious and charitable movement of the Christian Church, organized and operated in a military fashion. Its efforts are motivated by a love for God and a concern for the needs of all humanity.

History:
The Salvation Army has been a part of the Battle Creek since 1887.

Services include:

Sally’s Kitchen where a hot balanced meal is served Monday through Saturday. The meal is served from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm Monday through Friday. On Saturday’s the meal is served from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. From October 2008 to September 2009 over 56,000 meals were served through Sally’s Kitchen.

Social Service Office where individuals and families can receive assistance for emergency food, prescription drugs, rent, utilities, clothing, personal care items, transportation (in the state of Michigan only) and Shelter (if all shelters are full). Co-op Pantry Pacs are also available, $22.00 buys $50.00 worth of food.

Beauty Shop where anyone can receive a shampoo and a haircut. This service is provided by registered beauticians who volunteer their time. The shop is open every Thursday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.

After School Literacy program provides one on one tutoring, story time, and homework assistance. One on one tutoring takes place during the school day. Literacy clubs meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Youth Character Building programs provide fun, safe and educational opportunities through sunbeams for girls, girl guards for young women, and adventure corps and scouts for boys and young men. Rooted in the scouting tradition, The Salvation Army’s character building programs are biblically based with caring, trained leaders. Character Building groups meet on Monday’s from 4:15 pm until 5:45 pm. Transportation is available.

Summer Camp opportunities at Little Pine Island, The Salvation Army's camping facility in Grand Rapids, MI.

Christmas Outreach programs provide a basket of food and gifts for children during the holiday season. Over 700 families were helped in 2008. A Community Toy Shop in conjunction with the Marines Toys for Tots, Battle Creek Fire Departments and Angel Tree, provides agencies and churches a selection of toys that are given to their clients along with a food basket each agency or church provides.

Angel Tree Party, in conjunction Kellogg Community College provides a party for children in our Christmas case files. Party includes games, prizes, lunch, visit to Santa and a gift.

Community Care volunteers provide monthly visits to area nursing home and adult foster care residents. At Christmas and Easter gifts are given to residents.
During the holiday season 1,692 care facility residents were visited.

Disaster Work provides food, shelter, canteen and other needs a warranted, in cooperation with EFSP and the local Red Cross.

Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation is provided through our offices in Grand Rapids. This six month, Men’s Rehab program is offered at no cost to the client.
