We strive for all our animals to be humanely treated companion animals. We also strive to make the best possible match for both adopter and animal.
Description:
We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is south central Michigan's advocate, sanctuary, and source for companion animals. Our services include animal adoptions, animal intake and receiving, euthanasia and cremations, live trap rental, low income pet food bank, lost and found registry, and microchip sales. Our programs include education programs, hospice, pet therapy, foster care, volunteers, the Tyson Fund, Animal Victims of Domestic Violence, and animal cruelty. We are funded solely through individual donations and grants. We receive no government money, and we are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States.
History:
The Humane Society has experienced many name changes and location changes since its founding in 1887. In September 1938, the first shelter began operating on Riverside Drive. The shelter ceased operations due to a lack of funding in 1941. In 1953, the Humane Society achieved non-profit status and began operating a shelter on Edison Street. The Humane Society's current location at 2500 Watkins Road was dedicated in November 1988.
