The mission of Goodwill Industries is to help individuals with barriers to employment to experience the Power of Work, through training, support services, and career opportunities.

Description:
Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan's Heartland serves eight counties (Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, and Jackson), plus western Washtenaw County and northern Hillsdale County. Individual programs are designed to serve specific, diverse populations, including students with disabilities, adults leaving welfare, ex-offenders, and workers injured at their job sites who need temporary light-duty tasks before returning to work. The primary sources of funding for our programs are grants secured by the Workforce Development Dept., and revenues from the operation of 13 retail stores, an As Is Center in Charlotte, and four donation sites. This is why Goodwill appeals for donations of household items and clothing from residents and businesses. Stores are also training sites and work experience sites for program participants.

History:
Two Goodwill organizations, one in Battle Creek and one in Jackson, merged in 2007. Each had a colorful 50+-year history and deep community ties. The Battle Creek Goodwill was founded in 1953 by educator Doris Klaussen, an advocate for students with disabilities. The combined organization employs about 350 people.
