Developing and implementing a vision for Battle Creek neighborhoods by: Strengthening leadership, building resident power and capacity around ideas for change, developing equitable relationships, increasing City responsiveness, and leveraging resources and community knowledge.
Description:
The Neighborhood Services department works with all residents, who reside within the City of Battle Creek, that have an interest in creating positive change within their neighborhood and community. Residents can receive support in organizing a neighborhood association, neighborhood watch, community action, and partner with community collaboratives. In support of creating community and organizational change the Neighborhood Services department assists in elevating the voice of residents so that identified issues and needed services become heard. The development of both City and community partnerships is key to creating positive change.
History:
The Neighborhood Services department was created following a community engagement process in 1995. During a comprehensive community engagement process to design the City’s budget, residents identified the need to create stronger relationships with one another and better access to other community resources for problem solving on their own. Residents and staff visited “best practice” communities around the country and together worked to create the Neighborhood Partnership Department to service these needs..
