International Festival Of Lights

The International Festival of Lights began in 1991, with a generous gift of $20,000.00 from Denso. (Then Nippondenso.) The idea of "lights in down town" came from Mr. Ben Ohta who was then the President of Denso. The original purpose of the Festival was to provide an economic development tool for Battle Creek as so many business had closed and things looked pretty bleak in the downtown area of Battle Creek.

The first four years, 1991 - 1994, the Festival focused on lights in the downtown area, Zoolights Festival at Binder Park Zoo and the Warming House. In 1995, this event added "The trees around the world", which had a greater international focus. Elementary school children made Origami ornaments representing countries from around the world. This program was very successful. There were about 300 volunteers during the six-week event with 20-25 dedicated volunteers supporting the planning and set up of the event. The City and electrical workers were also directly involved as they assisted with set-up and the lights maintaining on throughout the six weeks. The International Festival of Lights kicks off the Saturday before Thanksgiving and continues through December 31st.

The holiday season is fast approaching and downtown Battle Creek will be transformed into a beautiful array of lighting with the 2009 International Festival of Lights. The lighted holiday displays celebrating the season will encourage visitors to walk along the linear path near the Battle Creek River.

After seeing the lights, visitors can go to any one of Downtown's many restaurants for a meal, dessert, or just a cup of hot chocolate.

We invite everyone to join in this most glorious celebration in downtown Battle Creek!
