HandsOn Battle Creek: VISTA Positions Available!!!

HandsOn Battle Creek is now seeking applications for TWO AmeriCorp VISTA positions within their organization.  Positions descriptions are below.

Community Engagement VISTA - Adult Programming

Position Description: The VISTA will build upon the awareness of the importance of community engagement in Battle Creek. The VISTA would essentially strengthen, build and maintain relationships with the community, numerous nonprofits, businesses, service clubs, and professional organizations.

Major Responsibilities:
• The VISTA will expand existing new relationships by presenting to service clubs, businesses, faith-based organizations, colleges, and organizations regarding community engagement.
• VISTA will market and promote volunteerism by hosting community engagement workshops, presentations, and booths in the community and during community events.
• VISTA will coordinate and assist in the planning of multiple one-day volunteer events.
• VISTA will expand and maintain relationships with over 100 organizations and help to outreach to new organizations in our area.
• VISTA will reach out to surrounding communities to partner with new organizations in need of volunteers.
• VISTA will develop and promote volunteer opportunities for groups, families, and court-ordered individuals.
• VISTA will match volunteers on a one-to-one basis based on their skills, interests, and schedule.

Recommended Skills:
• Good written and verbal communication abilities
• Good Computer Literacy: Microsoft programs and the internet
• Available personal transportation for travel within county (mileage will be reimbursed)
• Self-starter
• Ability to work as part of a team and individually
• Public speaking skills
• Leadership ability, with strong initiative and follow-through capacity
• Ability to work with diverse audiences
• Office experience or a background in communication, fundraising, business, marketing, or grant-writing a plus

Non-Profit Capacity Building VISTA - 211

Position Description: The VISTA will work with the 211 Program Coordinator to maintain and build up the 211 resource directory. The member will build upon the awareness of the importance of community engagement in Battle Creek. The VISTA would essentially strengthen, build and maintain relationships with the community, numerous nonprofits, businesses, service clubs, and professional organizations for 211.

Major Responsibilities:
• The VISTA will expand existing new relationships by presenting to service clubs, businesses, faith-based organizations, colleges, and organizations regarding community engagement.
• VISTA will reach out to surrounding communities to partner with new organizations in getting put in the 211 database
• Assisting in securing, and maintaining up-to-date, accurate information for the resource database. Assisting in running reports as needed by the community, labels, monthly call volume, etc.

Recommended Skills:
• Good written and verbal communication abilities with a concern for accuracy of information
• Good computer skills with emphasis on working with databases
• Available personal transportation for travel within county (mileage will be reimbursed)
• Self-starter
• Ability to work as part of a team and individually
• Public speaking skills
• Ability to work with diverse audiences
• Office experience or a background in communication

The TWO successful VISTA candidates will receive the following benefits:

• A $4,725 Education Award or $1,200 post-service stipend
• $833 monthly pay, dispersed bi-weekly pay

Trainings: VISTA will be required to attend a national orientation in September. The VISTA will have opportunities year long to attend workshops, conference, and trainings for professional development.

The VISTA member will start their year of service in September 2009.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older.
Both positions are full-time, for a 12 month term/period, with a minimum of 35 hours per week.
