Community BarnRaising: Coats for a Cause
HandsOn Battle Creek is now seeking volunteers for its fourth Community BarnRaising project of 2009. Community BarnRaising is a one day volunteer opportunity, whereby the community comes together at the same time, in the same place, to achieve a specific goal. On Saturday, October 10th, the goal is to provide warmth to as many children as possible here in Battle Creek! We will be partnering with Charitable Union to hand out new and gently used winter coats to children in need.
Charitable Union believes in providing clothing, bedding and small household items, at no cost, to families in need. By doing this, Charitable Union believes that the families will be supported and they will be able to advocate with them for their independence and self-sufficiency. The Charitable Union has been established and running as a not-for-profit organization in Battle Creek since 1887 and is the only organization of its capacity in the greater Battle Creek area. In 2008 alone Charitable Union distributed clothing to over 10,000 individuals, of which 4,500 were children in need. That totals out to be over 470,000 clothing items to families in need of clothing.
Join HandsOn Battle Creek at Full Blast on Saturday, October 10th from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon. Volunteers will be distributing children's coats, making fleece blankets and scarves, working snack duty, hosting games for the children and more. You don't want to miss this volunteer opportunity! Help a child in need receive the gift of warmth this season.
