Description:
Serving both Douglas and Josephine Counties, Umpqua Community Action Network (UCAN) is committed to helping people escape poverty and take control of their lives. UCAN services include: Emergency Housing Assistance, Energy Assistance, Rental Assistance, Case Management, Housing Development, Housing, Housing counseling, Weatherization & Energy Efficiency programs, Food Shares (warehousing, packaging, and distribution to food banks and kitchens), AmeriCorps*VISTA, Warm Line (resource referrals) USDA Adalt and Child Care, Translink (medicare transportation) Glide Woodlot (firewood for low income families), and we manage Umpqua Transit (public transportation). UCAN also have 17 Head Start programs throughout Douglas County. We have 71 affordable housing units with a plan for 50 more within the next 10 years.
History:
Established in 1969 by two "welfare mothers" who were not satisfied with the lack of services in Douglas County and established The Confidence Clinic for women in transition. UCAN increased programs over the years and now has 180 FTE, between 200 and 500 volunteers who work either for special events or in ongoing capacities.
