January's Volunteer of the Month is Peggy Decker. Peggy was nominated by Camp Millennium. Camp Millennium is a summer camp for children dealing with cancer. Peggy is the volunteer Revenue Director for the camp. She is responsible for submitting grants, coordinating fundraising efforts and volunteers to help raise funds for Camp Millennium. Without her hard work the camp would not be able to meet their budgetary needs to provide the camp for free to the children. Peggy makes inroads throughout the community to solicit ideas for events and to recruit a large body of volunteers. Her recent efforts included 3 weekends at a recent event at a local pumpkin patch which raised nearly $15,000 for the camp. She has also spents 10 days in the summer for the past 5 years volunteering at the camp with the children. Peggy says that she volunteers to help others and to feel good about herself. "It's fun. I can go to camp and act like a kid and no one can tell me not to," Peggy said about what she likes best about volunteering. These children are our future and have been dealt an incredible hand in life. It is so rewarding to see the sparkle in their eyes." When asked what she would say to others to inspire them to volunteer, Peggy said "Most people have a hard time volunteering time-wise. Any time spent is so worthwhile. It is good for everyone to do. You need to Pay it Forward." Peggy also volunteers with her family putting together and delivering food baskets to seniors during the holidays. She hopes to instill a love for volunteering in her son, who also helped out at the Pumpkin Patch this fall. Along with her volunteer work, Peggy is employed full time at Mercy Imaging. |
