The Volunteer Center of Washington County exists to mobilize people and resources for creative solutions to community needs.

Description:
Are you interested in helping with the basic human needs of Washington County? The Volunteer Center of Washington County is here to provide a link between non-proifit organization and volunteers. We actively assist in aiding the community. Some of our goals are:

Literacy - Help strengthen literacy or language skills
for children or adults in the community.

Homelessness - There are many in the community with
no place to live. Can you help address this important need?

Re-entry - During incarceration, RSVP Volunteers
have the opportunity to provide inmates with knowledge,
skills and abilities they will need to increase the
probability of their success upon release.

Emergency Preparedness & Management - Join the SW Utah Regional Citizen Corps Council - be trained to assist first responders in the event of a community emergency. Help make Washington County disaster resistant and disaster resilient.

History:
The Volunteer Center of Washington County was created in 1996 to work hand-in-hand with United Way Dixie adding 'manpower to money' in an effort to meet community needs.

For the first three years of operation, the Volunteer Center of Washington County was funded by the Utah Commission on Volunteers and from a small grant from the City of St. George. Contributions from the City of St. George, Washington County, United Way Dixie and federal grants from the National Senior Service Corps are now the primary funding sources for the operation of the Volunteer Center of Washington County.

In 1997 the Volunteer Center of Washington County was combined with the Five County RSVP Program and Linda Sappington was hired to direct programs with oversight by the Five County Association of Governments.

The Volunteer Center of Washington County was first located in Ancestor Square on St. George Boulevard. For two years, the Volunteer Center was housed in the Washington County Annex Building on 100 East. In December, 2002, the Volunteer Center moved permanently to the offices of our sponsoring agency - the Five County Association of Governments at 1070 W. 1600 S., Building B. in St. George, Utah.

The Volunteer Center of Washington County is one of 22 such organizations in the State of Utah. There are 450 similar organizations in the United States.
