Agency Details:
Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Utah-Southern Utah
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. We have a vision to provide every child in need living in the St. George area with a positive adult role model that can impact their life.
Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We have been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country - including St. George. We match up a child in need with a positive adult role model. After they are matched, they meet 2-4 times a month for the minimum of a year. We build relationships, and the program is proven to work. A recent study conducted by a national research firm (Public/Private Ventures (PP/V)) examined the impact of our program on youth and found that when compared to their peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters who met with their Big Brothers or Sisters for at least one year were: 46% less likely to start using drugs; 27% less likely to start drinking; 33% less likely to act violently; 52% less likely to skip a day of school, and earned higher grades.
History:
For over a century, Big Brothers and Big Sisters have helped children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with proven results. In 1904, a young New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter was seeing more and more boys come through his courtroom. He recognized that caring adults could help many of these kids stay out of trouble, and he set out to find volunteers. That marked the beginning of the Big Brothers movement. By 1916, Big Brothers had spread to 96 cities across the country. At around the same time, the members of a group called Ladies of Charity were befriending girls who had come through the New York Children’s Court. That group would later become Catholic Big Sisters. Both groups continued to work independently until 1977, when Big Brothers of America and Big Sisters International joined forces and became Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. More than a century later, Big Brothers Big Sisters remains true to our founders’ vision of bringing caring mentors into the lives of children. Big Brothers Big Sisters currently operates in all 50 states … and in 12 countries around the world! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. They opened three more satellite offices in Northern Utah, Summit and Wasatch County, and Southern Utah. The Southern Utah satellite office is celebrating its 5th year in service to the community this year as well.
