Are you an individual who is retired and looking for something to do that can give back to the community? Are you a child/grandchild or associate that knows great individuals who are 60 and over who could use an excuse to get out of the house? Then ask and see you or your loved one qualified to become a Foster Grandparent. The Foster Grandparent program is a program by the Cooperation on National and Community Service that is implemented locally in Washington County through the Volunteer Center of Washington County. To qualify for Senior Companions, one must meet an income requirement. Qualifying volunteers can earn a tax-free $2.15 an hour stipend for the service they provide in the local schools where they assist teachers and school resource personnel in working with children who could use extra help with basic skills such as reading and mathematics. Although not everyone will meet the income or age eligibility, others interested in helping Washington County Schools can contact our program to volunteer, even if it is not as a Foster Grandparent.
Once again, Foster Grandparents must be over 60 and meet the income criteria of the program (call to find out what the criteria is). Furthermore, volunteers should be good with children, have a clean criminal record, and be dependable. For more information, please contact the program coordinator.
