WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD?

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 6, 2009

YOU CAN make a difference in the life of a child! HOW? CASA! What is CASA you say, no not a house Senor, it is Court Appointed Special Advocates, it is a national organization, of community volunteers who are trained and appointed by the court to speak up for abused and neglected children...Who are CASA advocates? CASA advocates are screened, and trained. They conduct an independent investigation, working under the Guardian ad Litem, monitor situations, and make observations to the juvenile court. Advocates meet with teachers, therapists, caseworkers, and all who are involved with the case. They attend court hearings, reviews, and staffings, and assist the Guardian ad Litem Attorney's in advocating for what is in the best interest of the child.
Independent studies have determined that children who suffer abuse or neglect are:
53% more likely to become juvenile delinquents
38% more likely to be arrested as adults
38% more likely to become violent criminals
CASA has been recognized by the U.S.Department of Justice as a model juvenile delinquency prevention program. When CASA's involvement in a child's case prevents later juvenile delinquency and placement, the investment in CASA representation for that one child will have paid off 40 times over. Currently in Washington County we have over 570 children in the system with only two Guardian ad Litems, you can see why there is a great need for advocates. The assistance of CASA advocates to serve as the "eyes and ears" and to monitor the case, as well as to provide positive experiences and role modeling for the child is absolutely essential if we are to break the cycle of abuse.
