Waukesha County residents interested in becoming a volunteer mentor or enrolling a child with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) are invited to a drop-in discussion on Wednesday, July 2, between 5-7 p.m. at the Waukesha Public Library, 321 Wisconsin Ave.        Between 5-6 p.m. BBBS staff and volunteers will discuss Waukesha County mentoring opportunities, explain the interview process and share ideas on simple and fun activities volunteers can do as mentors.      Parents and/or guardians who want to enroll a child should arrive between 6-7 p.m. Staff will take applications and discuss how BBBS matches children with carefully screened adult volunteer mentors. Interests, personalities and a child’s individual needs are taken into consideration. There are immediate openings for girls interested in being matched with a Big Sister.      In 2007, 236 Waukesha children were matched with an adult volunteer in BBBS mentoring programs.  BBBS volunteers mentor children three to four times a month through two mentoring options. The Community-based program centers on volunteers setting up regular activities with the child. Activities may include going to the park, hiking and sporting events, or participating in simple everyday activities such as cooking, gardening and carpentry.      The Site-based program, offered during the school year, allows volunteers to meet one-on-one with a child at a school site and assist children with homework and play games. There are four Waukesha after-school mentoring sites: Saratoga Elementary, White Rock Elementary, Whittier Elementary and Blair Elementary.      For more information, call Tracie Thacker, BBBS recruitment specialist, at 414-258-4778, ext. 251.
