Sakonnet Arts Network

Sakonnet Arts Network promotes the arts by providing programs, resources, and educational opportunities in Tiverton, Rhode Island and surrounding areas.

Description:
Sakonnet Arts Network is a newly formed nonprofit arts organization based in Tiverton. The Network offers workshops, classes, performances and opportunities for artists to exhibit their work. Classes in the community are geared for adults and teens. After school classes and artists-in-residence during school are also supported by the Network These experiences enhance students' learning by integrating arts into the school curiculum. In addition, a website provides a calendar, information about regional arts resources, and another venue to artists to share selected works.

History:
A diverse group of local arts organizations met in mid-2007 to discuss sharing human and financial resourses and improving communications among local artists and between these artists and the larger community. After a series of meetings, the organizations and individuals that remained committed to these goals (Friends of Arts in Tiverton, Theater Direct, ArtsExpress and representatives of the Tiverton Schools), merged to form the Sakonnet Arts Network that was incorporated as a nonprofit with the State of Rhode Island in April 2008. In its initial year, the Network has focused its efforts in Tiverton. The Network plans to engage artists and community members in the adjacent towns of Little Compton, RI and Westport, MA in the future.
