The Peace Flag Project - RI - Providence
The Peace Flag Project (PFP) provides the opportunity for people to create flags to express their deepest hopes and dreams. Inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags, these flags show us the important things we want for ourselves, our families, our communities, for the people of the world and for the planet. Together, the flags describe our wishes for a more peaceful and kinder world. Our main event each year is the celebration of the UN International Day of Peace on Sept. 21. This is a large event in downtown Providence and involves the diverse ethnic and national communities of Rhode Island. We also collaborate with schools and other organizations to build peace gardens and parks.
Description:
We are a small, pro-peace nonprofit, and our focus is on creating more peace in our everyday lives. Our emphasis is on how we live with our families, friends and community members; what kind of citizens, coworkers and colleagues we are; and how we educate our children and work for social justice. Our focus is on how we live on this planet and use its resources. Our goal is for all people to live in a Culture of Peace.
History:
The Peace Flag Project was created in 2004 by two RI women, Ginny Fox and Jane Maguire. Jane has now retired, and Ginny is the Director of the PFP. We wanted to create a way for people to connect to their deepest dreams for the world, and we have made Peace Flags with people all over RI as a way for everyone to express those important wishes. These flags and our other activities connect our imaginations to the real world. Einstein said, "Imagination is a preview of life's coming attractions." What we can imagine, we can work to make a reality. We are inspired by the United Nations: the Declaration of Human Rights, the Culture of Peace and the Peace Manifesto. The Culture of Peace and Peace Manifesto were created by five Nobel Peace Laureates who described ways for ordinary people to work for peace themselves. We are interested in making the creation of peace part of our everyday lives, and their work has been an important inspiration.
