U.S. Naval War College Foundation
The Naval War College Foundation shall remain a leader in creating and administering programs and services that will enhance its ability to support the College’s teaching, research, simulation and public outreach initiatives, and be the standard against which similar foundations are measured.
Description:
The Naval War College Foundation encourages and supports the excellence of the Naval War College in carrying out its mission. In doing so, the Foundation solicits, receives and administers funds, securities, and gifts-in-kind, which are then provided to the College for the strengthening of its academic, research, simulation and facilities enhancement programs in areas where funding from the U.S. Government is not available. We seek to develop and be prudent stewards of our relationships and resources, work to increase public awareness of the Naval War College capabilities, programs and research activities and assist in sustaining an active alumni affairs program.
History:
In November 1969, the idea of a Naval War College Foundation was established by 176 men and women of vision who came together as Founder Members for the purpose of assisting the College. Incorporated in the state of Rhode Island as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) entity, the Foundation’s purposes are educational and charitable. It solicits, receives and administers funds, securities and gifts-in-kind for the encouragement and support of the academic, research, and simulation programs as well as facilities enhancement projects of the College.
The Foundation supports a variety of programs designed to enrich the academic and research experiences of the students and faculty. These programs, which involve both direct and indirect assistance, serve to:
• Increase public awareness of the Naval War College’s mission and accomplishments,
• Provide financial support to NWCF Board of Trustees approved projects at the College for which public funds are either insufficient or not available,
• Assist the College in sustaining an active alumni affairs program.
In carrying out these functions the Foundation, among other things, sponsors an evening lecture series that is free and open to the public; supports the Current Strategy Forum, the Spring and Fall Intersessional Conferences, other timely and relevant forums and international programs; endows academic chairs; augments the distinguished faculty with visiting lecturers; provides modern technology for student usage; supports faculty research and curriculum development; provides academic awards presented to deserving student scholars at graduation; and assists with museum displays and library acquisitions and rare books preservation. All of these serve to enhance the College’s Margin of Excellence.
