Narragansett Bay Research Reserve
To preserve and protect representative estuarine habitats within Narragansett Bay and provide opportunities for long-term research, education, and training for sound coastal stewardship.
Description:
The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve is part of a national network of protected areas established to promote informed management of the Nation’s estuaries and coastal habitats through research and education. Located in the heart of Narragansett Bay on four islands (Prudence, Patience, Hope and Dyer), the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve protects approximately 4400 acres of land and water.
History:
The Narragansett Bay Research Reserve was designated in 1980 through a partnership between the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). Over the years we have also become close partners with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.
