History:
The GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Warwick Women’s Club was organized in the city of Warwick, Rhode Island in 1952 by a group of community minded women who sought to improve the city. The club joined the national organization (1952) in order to work with other women’s clubs throughout the United States. In order to be designated a non-profit, charitable organization; the club drew up papers of incorporation in 1955. During its earliest years, the club was called the Warwick Junior Women’s Club as its members were young women and mothers under the age of 40. As the Junior Pledge indicated, the club’s goal was to “live each day, trying to accomplish something, not merely to exist.” With this in mind, the club began its working to improve the communities within Warwick. Many of its early projects are now established entities in the city. Such as the central library on Sandy Lane, the Warwick Art Museum next to city hall, the Elizabeth Bullum Chace Center on West Shore Road (domestic violence prevention), the House of Hope (transitional shelters throughout the city). One of its early initiatives was finger print very young child as a way for parents to identify missing children (1960’s). This protocol is now standard practice in the Early Childhood Round Up conducted by the Volunteers of Warwick Schools (VOWS). In addition, providing assistance to young women by funding a scholarship at the Rhode Island Community College (CCRI), originally aimed at aiding women who are returning or entering the workforce after raising young children. No longer limited by age restrictions, the no longer “junior” club (1990’s) has partnered with other community groups to provide services such as collecting food for the local food bank, cleaning a historical cemetery, supporting the Hasbro Children’s Hospital, fostering mentoring with the RI Mentoring Partnership, planting trees and flowers at city locations, supporting conservation and recycling efforts and participating in the local historical parade; while continuing to support those agencies it founded. The club is frequently called on by local leaders and community groups to get involved in an cornucopia of activities – all linked to meeting the changing needs of its community.
