Socio-Economic Development Center For Southeast Asians (SEDC)
The mission of the Socio-Economic Development Center for Southeast Asians (SEDC) is to promote the evolution of healthy and productive citizens among people with roots in Southeast Asia by facilitating their transition to life in America while cultivating their heritage; and to encourage their involvement in the design and implementation of efforts that support economic development, family harmony, and community well-being.
Description:
SEDC provides social service programs to Southeast Asians in Providence, Rhode Island. Our programs and services include: Family Support Program, Youth and Family Development Services, Victims of Crime Assistance (VOCA), Substance Abuse Prevention (SAP), Elderly Services and Meal Site (Meals on Wheels), Health Advocacy, Voter Registration, the International Language Bank, Citizenship Classes, and ESL/GED Classes.
History:
SEDC is a community-based organization which was formed in 1987 when the four Mutual Assistance Associations representing the four Southeast Asian ethnic groups in Rhode Island (Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and Vietnamese) joined to form a coalition to serve the needs of Southeast Asians and other ethnic minorities. Since its creation, SEDC has moved to the forefront in efforts to bridge the gap between mainstream American society and the Southeast Asian communities. Located in Providence, SEDC operates with 9 full and 8 part time staff.
