Kids' Tri RI
Kids' Tri RI has been put together to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with the express goal of helping end childhood blood cancers. We who have worked on Kids' Tri RI have also affiliated our program with the National Institutes of Health "We Can!" (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition). We are thus hoping to encourage children to make healthy choices while helping other children who have had little control over the blood cancers they fight.
Description:
Kids' Tri RI has been put together to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with the express goal of helping end childhood blood cancers. We who have worked on Kids' Tri RI have also affiliated our program with the National Institutes of Health "We Can!" (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition). We are thus hoping to encourage children to make healthy choices while helping other children who have had little control over the blood cancers they fight. Behind us is Team in Training, which was established twenty years ago when a man named Bruce Cleland trained with a group of friends to run the New York City Marathon in honor of his baby daughter, Georgia, who had leukemia. He and his friends referred to themselves as the “team in training.” As a result of one man’s efforts 360,000 people have since trained with Team in Training, and have raised more than 850 million dollars to find a cure. Oh, what one person can do to make a change in the world!
History:
The brief history of Kids' Tri RI comes from the enthusiasm our own children showed as we trained for the NYC Triathlon this past summer. We discovered that kids' triathlons have become very popular, and as we are both in education, we saw a "learning opportunity" waiting to happen. As we researched kids' triathlons, we also allied ourselves with "We Can!" a science-based program aimed at helping kids make healthy choices. The "We Can!" program began taking shape at the National Institutes of Health, and continues under the NIH aegis. "We Can!" program has an unfunded mandate, and all work done for it is considered grass-roots community organizing.
