Derrick Cazard Foundation
The primary purpose of the Derrick Cazard foundation is to provide underprivileged/low income families with limited resources, funds for their children to participate in activities that will enhance their development and provide positive community experiences.
Description:
Children and adolescents that qualify for funds are receiving mental health services from private practitioners on Aquidneck Island. Private practitioners have limited resources for their clients and this is an innovative way to combine the private for profit sector with resources from a non-profit public charity, as most clinics and agencies have many resources available to their clients. Parents apply for funds through an application process and funds are paid directly to agencies that are providing activities. A secondary mission is to mentor and support young board members in their pursuit of non-profit development and experience. This is a newly developing organization.
History:
A vibrant and bright young man named Derrick Cazard passed away in a drowning accident on June 30, 2008. The Foundation was initially developed as a memorial fund and as things evolved we decided to build a non-profit agency for children in his name. Derrick really enjoyed children. Since then, some people have gone and new people have come aboard. We have a lot of young people on the board and committee with a lot of energy, creativity, and innovative ideas. We are members of the independent sector and we are in the process of developing a web site which we have most of the parts for just waiting to be approved before it is complete. It is a work in progress.
