Literacy Volunteers Of Washington County
To foster and promote literacy through free instructional services for adults in southeastern Connecticut and southwestern Rhode Island
Description:
Accredited by ProLiteracy America and funded in part by the Rhode Island Department of Education, LVWC seeks to provide individual tutoring, small group instruction, and/or computer assisted learning in Washington County. Free services target adults who test at or below the intermediate levels either as native speakers of English or as English Language Learners. Participants and volunteers must agree to fifty instructional hours per fiscal year -- from July 1 to June 30. History:
Literacy Volunteers of Washington County (LVWC) began as an outreach program of the Westerly Public Library in 1982 and filed its articles of incorporation in 1988. In June of 2008, the former Literacy Volunteers of South County began operating under the mantle of Literacy Volunteers of Washington County.
