Description:
We are a statewide organization, dedicated specifically to providing emotional support, guidance, and education for those who are suddenly faced with both the immediate and potentially long-term effects of brain injury. This organization has worked to expand services in RI for the care and rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained brain injuries. Our efforts include increasing the publics' awareness of traumatic brain injury and its consequences, encouraging appropriate rehabilitation and services for survivors. We actively collaborate with state and private entities to educate survivors, family members and professionals on all aspects of brain injury prevention, treatment and support needs. In 2003, the BIARI opened a Brain Injury Resource Center to improve access to information on TBI, and to enhance the effectiveness of agencies and service providers who work with survivors of brain injury. BIARI is committed to bringing the problems associated with brain injury to statewide attention and advocating for programs and services to meet the needs of this population.
History:
The RI Chapter of the National Head Injury Foundation was founded in 1983 by families of persons with brain injuries and dedicated professionals to fulfill the need for support and information. We're a chartered affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America. In 1995, our named changed to the Brain Injury Association of RI, Inc. to match the name-change of our parent organization. Besides our popular Brain Injury Resource Center, we co-sponsor 4 support groups throughout the state, host an annual day-long brain injury conference, and hold an annual 5K Walk & Family Picnic in the fall.
