English for Action
Our mission is to serve Latino immigrant families in Providence through participatory English language and childcare programs that link language learning, leadership development and community building. We strive to create transformative learning environments inside and outside the classroom, in order to effect meaningful and community-based social change in Olneyville and Providence.
Description:
We provide low-cost, accessible ESOL classes to adult immigrant learners, as well as educational childcare for their children. Classes meet four nights a week, from 6:00 to 8:00PM, at William D’Abate Elementary School. We offer four different levels of ESOL, ranging from Beginner to Advanced, as well as an all-women’s ESOL and leadership class, a Family Literacy class, and a community leadership program. All of our classes and workshops are designed to build self confidence, self expression and hope for immigrant families in need of healing. Most of our learners had to leave their home countries in order to escape from economic hardship and political violence. By basing our curriculum in learners’ needs to share their personal histories and become active in their new communities, we help them build safe and healthy futures for their families.
History:
English for Action was founded in 1999 to address the growing need for English language education in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Since then, we have served over 400 immigrant families from all over Providence.
