 Interpreter needed for languages other than Spanish The patients at Rhode Island Free Clinic come from a variety of backgrounds and many do not speak English. Volunteering as an interpreter will give you the opportunity to assist our patients as they go through their visit at the clinic. You will be in the exam room with the patient and the health provider, directly translating the interaction. You will also help clinic staff and medical assistants to make phone calls to non-English-speaking patients. You will not need to stay for the whole clinic and will only be called in when your services are needed for a specific patient. Requirements: You do not need any clinical background or certification for this position. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and have good conversational skills in English as well as another language. It is preferred that the volunteer have some knowledge of medical terminology, but some training on this can be provided. Languages that are needed include but are not limited to:
Portuguese Cape Verdean Creole French Cambodian Nepali And many others! What you will gain from this position: Direct contact with patients. Direct contact with clinical providers. From Rt. 95 south:
Take Allens Ave/Eddy St. exit (#19) off 95.
Go straight off exit ramp on to Dudley St (with RIH and Hasbro on right, Co-op Building on left).
Continuing straight on Dudley St., take left at 2nd Stop sign on to Prairie Ave.
Follow Prairie Ave until the first light at the intersection of Public Street (Prairie Diner is on the corner)
Take a right on to Public and go straight through to the next light, where it intersects with Broad Street.
Take a right on to Broad Street and Hindle Building is one block down on the left.
The building is tan brick, 3 stories, and sits back from the street with parking in front.
The clinic and administrative offices are now all on the third floor. The receptionist's desk is past the elevator on the left side.
From Rt. 95 north:
Take Thurbers Avenue exit off Rt. 95 and bear left toward Eddy St.
At stop light at end of the exit ramp, bear right onto Eddy.
Follow Eddy until the light at intersection with Dudley.
Turn left at that light on to Dudley (with RIH and Hasbro on right, Co-op Building on left).
Follow same directions as above.
From Rhode Island/Women & Infants' Hospitals:
Follow directions above from Dudley Street.
