Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on November 16, 2009 |
Reading Buddies is a research-based literacy intervention program for Providence elementary school children in which volunteers provide individualized tutoring with the same students every week. Reading Buddies is Providence's adaptation of the Book Buddies program out of the University of Virginia, which was developed as a structure for utilizing volunteers for reading intervention. This initiative has proven successful in increasing reading skills, class participation, self-confidence, and motivation. The volunteer tutors work two times a week during school, using prescribed materials developed by Providence School Department literacy instructors and reading specialists in partnership with VIPS. Two tutors can share a Reading Buddies position, having each tutor come once per week to work with the same two children. Reading Buddies is an early reading intervention for at risk students. It is delivered at an age when intervention has huge results in a shorter period of time than later years. VIPS’ vision is that the Reading Buddies will be accessible to all below grade level readers in the public school system.
All prospective volunteers must undergo a criminal background and sex offender check. Two personal references are contacted. This opportunity is sponsored by: Volunteers In Providence Schools
