Internship Title: Marketing and Development Intern Supervisor: Bronwyn Dannenfelser, Director of Development Sierra Barter, Development Assistant Contact: John Crisafulli, Director of Volunteerism and Public Relations john@waterfire.org 401-273-9727 GENERAL FUNCTION: The Development Intern will work closely with the Director of Resource Development and the Development Associate, and other members of the WaterFire staff to prepare for and carry out WaterFire events between the dates of September 1 and May 31, for the academic year. The internship – which may be done for academic credit, career exploration, or service learning – will involve the intern in a variety of activities including: press releases, sponsorship relations, media contacts, organizing and project planning, website maintenance, new media projects, assistance at events and more. Responsibilities on the evenings of the event which may include: communicating with volunteers and VIP guests, set-up, errand running, organizing boat rides, decorating, breakdown, and clean-up. KNOW HOW The intern should have a sincere interest in learning more about art, culture, and community through the workings of a nonprofit organization, be available 10-20 hours per week (some evening hours required) for a total of 12 weeks, be prepared to help out with anything that staff would do, accept on-the-job training and supervision, be capable of generating enthusiasm, have the desire to work with a team, have good computer skills, and not be afraid of physical work. The internship is open to any major from any college, but the understanding is that the intern be amenable to performing a wide array of tasks in order to promote the art & community vision that is WaterFire. JOB SEGMENT Tasks will change daily depending on the needs of the organization, but will include a variety of desk work as well as physical work on event days. The intern will have direct contact with media and sponsor relations along with WaterFire staff members. TIME COMMITMENT Part time; Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms COMPENSATION Unpaid. LOCATION WaterFire Providence Studio 101 Regent Avenue Providence, RI 02908 EFFECT ON END RESULT The Development Intern will assist the Director of Resource Development and the Development Associate ensuring that every WaterFire event operates smoothly and reflects positively on the organization while constantly improving WaterFire’s public image by promoting the connections between art, culture, and community. The Development Intern will also develop a keen awareness and understanding the importance of non-profit sponsorships and the project planning process. WHAT WILL THE INTERN GAIN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE? The intern will be given an up-close view of the inner workings of a major nonprofit organization dedicated to the ritual of renewal in a city through the magic of art and music, water and fire. An internship at WaterFire is a very unique experience allowing interns to work side-by-side with staff and members of the community to present an amazing and moving event. Whether an intern is interested in learning more about the workings of a nonprofit, about art, theatre, music, or community, an internship at WaterFire combines it all. A WaterFire intern will finish his or her internship with experience in many areas: nonprofit administration, event planning, preparation, and execution, and a better understanding of the intersection between art & culture and community. An intern completing an internship at WaterFire will have a nationally known organization listed on his or her resume. Interns who perform their work as expected can look forward to using designated WaterFire staff members for references and recommendations.
Must be able to confidently take and follow direction, as well as multi-task. Must have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Must work well independently and with others. Access to a car and a valid driver’s license are preferable.
