Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on November 16, 2009 |
VIPS volunteers are requested by teachers and placed in the classroom to work with students who need academic support. VIPS tutors work in all subject areas and are required to volunteer for a minimum of 1 hour per week. While the primary purpose of this intervention is in school academic support, the volunteer naturally serves as a role model to the student. All volunteers are encouraged to discuss the importance of education in the context of long term happiness and meeting personal and professional goals. Our volunteers encourage and support their students as they face their difficult personal and educational challenges. Bonds between the student and volunteer often extend beyond their immediate academic needs. VIPS volunteers continue to have a positive effect on students and the classroom environment. VIPS distributes annual teacher surveys and reports consistently find VIPS volunteers help students improve academically as well as in the areas of self-confidence, class participation and social and communication skills. All prospective volunteers undergo a criminal background and sex offender check. Two references are contacted and a mandatory training completes the screening process.
