"Heads Up" is VOWS’ ten week, early intervention program for second graders that teaches age-appropriate lessons on self-awareness, conflict resolution, cultural sensitivity and violence and bullying prevention skills. It is a pre-delinquency effort that pairs trained volunteers with second grade teachers in Warwick Public Schools to help stem the rising tide of violence and bullying among children in schools, in the home and in our communities. Heads Up is currently presented in fourteen of the twenty public elementary schools here in Warwick. It was designed by a curriculum consultant to bring age appropriate bullying awareness to students, primarily teaching the children to: · identify and practice conflict resolution skills · identify and construct common ground when problems arise assess and create options for resolving conflicts · develop effective problem solving skills for daily use By providing these skills to the students, our goal is to help create an in-school climate more conducive to teaching and learning. It is very successful going into its fifth year, and has been incorporated into the Health and Family Life Curriculum, with the full support and backing of the Superintendent of Schools and the Warwick School Committee. The Volunteers who present the lessons in the classrooms are recruited, trained and supervised in the program, and have become much requested by students, teachers and principals alike.
Training is provided in three workshops which focus on three to four weekly curriculum presentations each. This opportunity is sponsored by: Volunteers of Warwick Schools
