The goal of the Leadership Development and Advocacy Committee is twofold: to help consumers learn leadership skills and to advocate for independent living issues. Leadership skills are necessary tools in advocating for one’s self and/or system change. Committee members recommend training opportunities, as well as organize and facilitate workshops in areas of advocacy, communication and other areas important to people with disabilities. In addition, committee members should be aware of or learn about pending State legislation that will affect independent living. Committee members advocate for appropriate legislation or changes to pending legislation through written correspondence and telephone calls. This committee meets once a month for 2 hours. People with disabilities and/or people wanting to help people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Committee members are reimbursed for travel. This opportunity is sponsored by: RI Statewide Independent Living Council
