Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on June 26, 2009 |
Habitat volunteers come from all walks of life, from students to church members, construction workers to lawyers, teachers to office workers. Volunteers are the core of our support and are essential to the mission of Habitat. By working with volunteers of all skill levels, we are able to involve the greater community in the process of house construction and to keep the costs of housing as low as possible to keep them affordable for low-income families. Volunteers are needed in all areas of our organization, but particularly in the construction of the houses. No construction skills are needed to become involved. Every level of volunteerism is important to help us maintain the success of our mission. However, we are particularly looking for skilled volunteers to be team leaders. Volunteers are needed each Saturday to work on our sites. One weekday (Wednesday) is set aside for retired persons.
We request that volunteers call us ahead of time to make sure the site is open and that there is sufficient work. Large groups have to call and schedule a workday. We are open to working with court-appointed community service volunteers. Groups of 6 participants from schools, churches, clubs and businesses can sign up. Larger groups from businesses may be accommodated on a case by case basis. CALL to schedule. Youths, aged 16 and 17 can volunteer at our projects with a responsible adult volunteering with them.

Overall Experience

Good for working with your hands!
 |
Good if you like working with your hands! I volunteered with Habitat as part of the GP Chamber Ambassador program. When I first arrived on site, I was told that there wasn't enough work for me and my husband to do. However, about 1/2 hour later, we were sent to a different site, where we began shingling a roof. I'd never done that before, but it turned out to be relatively easy once I got over being nervous about the height. What was really cool was meeting the family that would be eventually moving into the house. They had made a feast for the volunteers to share over lunch. It really brought home that we were going to make a significant difference in someone's life. Also, because I work with my "head" all the time, I really appreciated the opportunity to work with my "hands" instead. Highly recommended!
