Work one-on-one, in a small group, or in a staffed computer lab with adults who want to improve their reading and writing or learn English as a second language. Orientation and training are required for tutors before they are matched with a student. Help a student learn to improve their use of English, obtain a GED, or update computer skills. Orientations Sept 15: 10:30 a.m. Peace Dale Library 6:30 p.m. Westerly Tower Street Literacy Center Sept 21: 7:00 p.m. Peace Dale Library Sept 28 7:00 p.m. North Kingstown Library Tutor Training at the Westerly Tower Street Literacy Center Five Sessions at 6:30 p.m. Sept 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, with a practicum from 10/27—11/17 Wrap Up Nov 17
Instructional volunteers must complete an eighteen hour training course and commit to working with a student for fifty hours. The instruction begins in September and ends in June. Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is located in the Tower Street School Community Center at the intersection of 93 Tower Street and the Narragansett Avenue Extension. From route one south, take a right on Tower Street and proceed for a half mile. Turn right on the Narragansett Avenue Extension and park in the first parking area on the right. Tutoring and small group instruction may be arranged in public libraries throughout Washington County.
