RSS XML FeedBackground Active Jun 22, 2006 to Jul 15, 2006

The award is given to a Rhode Islander whose career accomplishments fit the following criteria:

·        Many years of consistent dedication and action on behalf of underprivileged people.

·        Connection with the non-profit world, including United Way.

·        Demonstrated commitment to working toward sustained changes in the community that  transform lives and reduce need.  Particular consideration is given to nominees whose community service focuses on issues affecting children’s opportunities to succeed in school, homelessness and affordable housing, and workforce development. Commitment may comprise generous investments of personal time, expertise and/or financial resources.

Nomination letters of no more than two pages describing how the potential recipient meets the award’s criteria should be sent to United Way of Rhode Island, 229 Waterman Street, Providence, RI 02906 no later than July 15. Please indicate on the envelope: “Chafee Award.”

The award will be presented by a member of the Chafee family at United Way’s annual celebratory event scheduled for September 21.

The late Senator Chafee was the first recipient of the award in 1999. Noreen Shawcross, Director of the State Office of Housing and Community Development, was last year’s recipient.

The United Way of Rhode Island is dedicated to mobilizing the caring power of the community to improve the lives of people in need.  Hank Sennott can answer additional questions.  He can be reached at 401-444-0644 or hank.sennott@uwri.org
