Donated food is redistributed to the Food Bank's 500 member agency programs, 229 of which are emergency food providers such as food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Through its member agencies, the Food Bank feeds hungry and poor people throughout communities in Rhode Island. An average of 546,000 pounds of donated food is distribute monthly to approximately 51,000 people each month. Nearly half of the food recipients are children. Founded in 1982, the Food Bank solicits and stores surplus food and grocery products donated by supermarkets, wholesalers, food processors, and local farmers. Another valuable source of food donations are food drives, the largest of which are Scouting For Food in November and the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive in May. Volunteers and support is needed by the RI Community Food Bank all year long. Check out their list of volunteer opportunities to see what you can do!
